Wianta Foundation

The Wianta Foundation was founded in 1991 by Made Wianta in Denpasar, Bali, and is managed by Ir. Intan Kirana Wianta. It is a non-profit organisation designed to encourage artistic creativity and innovation to promote research, education, and development in the field of art and culture, and also to preserve endangered Balinese art forms.

 

Wianta realized that his life and his creativity came from art and culture, therefore, he want to share of his successfully with its root. The Wianta Foundation is non profit organization which receives funding from private donors, government and charitable organizations.

 

During its twenty years, the foundation has carried out the following projects:

 

1991

Art Camp - a week of art and cultural performances, critiques and discussions attended by many Indonesian artists, musicians, poets and scholars, as well as foreign artists living in Bali.

 

1992
Cultural Preservation Project - a revival, research and documentation of gambuh, an ancient classical Balines dance-drama, sponsored by the Ford Foundation.

 

1993

Art for AIDS - a fund raising exhibition of Made Wianta's art works by the UCSF's (University of California at San Fransisco) Center for Aids Prevention and Studies.

 

1994

Literature Appreciation - readings and critiques of various Indonesian and foreign short stories, poetry, and other literature.

 

1995

Theater Development - discussions and workshops to catalyze the development of modern theater in Bali. The Jakarta-based SAE Theater and Le Moment of Switzerland were invited to join the workshops.

 

1996

Catur Yuga Project - various activities to promote inter-cultural dialogues between artists from Switzerland and Indonesia.

 

1999

Art and Peace - a colossal total art event at the closing of the 2nd millennium involving 2000 dancers and a 2000 meter long peace banner on Padanggalak Beach, Sanur, Bali. National painting and poetry competitions, traditional and modern performances, and seminars about peace coincided with the event.

 

2000

Performance Art Jalan - set on a road in Lodtunduh village, Ubud, Bali, which turned out to be contraversial, eliciting protest from local people.
